Ramah Navajo Fair and Rodeo returns Aug. 22–24 with new events, rodeo competitions

PINE HILL, N.M.

The Ramah Navajo Fair and Rodeo will return this weekend with cultural celebrations, rodeo competitions and community events.

The fair, set for Aug. 22–24 at the Ramah Navajo Fairgrounds, will carry the theme “United We Stand: Protect Our Rights, Preserve Our Culture.” Organizers say the event will showcase the resilience of the Navajo people while welcoming visitors to share in the traditions of the community.

“We’re thrilled to welcome visitors from all over to our beautiful community,” said Richard C. Begay, the public relations coordinator for the Ramah Navajo Fair and Rodeo. “This event is a testament to the strength and resilience of our people, and we’re honored to share it with the world.”

Fair coordinator Monica Yazzie said this year’s schedule will feature new attractions, including a chainsaw contest, car show, basketball tournament and mud bogging.

“We invite everyone to come and experience the best of Ramah Navajo,” Yazzie said. She added that while the fair was unable to secure a carnival – the company it had worked with went out of business during the COVID-19 pandemic – organizers are still hopeful for future years.

Rodeo coordinator Nate Henio said the rodeo program will include junior events for kids, a senior rodeo, bull riding and women’s competitions. Preparations are underway to ready both the rodeo grounds and the fairgrounds for the festivities. The rodeo is also partnering with Angels Against Drunk Drivers to promote safety during the event.

“We’re working hard to prepare the rodeo grounds and fairgrounds to make it a memorable experience,” Henio said.

The Ramah Navajo Fair is held in partnership with the New Mexico Tourism Department and sponsored in part by KGAK radio. Organizers encourage visitors to take time to explore state landmarks and national monuments during their visit.
