
RDC delays rescission decision on Shonto Chapter’s business site leasing delegation

Tensions flared at Tuesday’s public hearing as the Resource and Development Committee members decided whether to revoke Shonto Chapter’s authority to manage business site leases, a power granted 17 years ago.

After hours of testimony, the RDC postponed its decision until April 30, citing missing documentation and unresolved questions about accountability.
The dispute centers on the completed but unopened Shonto Hotel, a $20 million project that can’t open yet because of a lack of completed paperwork. Charlene Begay Platero of the Division of Economic Development testified that Shonto’s failure to finalize a lease with operator Medallion Hospitality violates multiple regulations.

“We completed our task, and the facility is ready to open,” Platero told the committee, “But there is no lease for the lessee to operate.
“The Nation and the community are missing out on sales tax, hotel occupancy tax, and income for 30 Navajo workers.”
