Social Security shortfall could cut benefits for Diné retirees in 2032
WINDOW ROCK
Unless Congress acts, Social Security retirement benefits are projected to be cut by about 24% in late 2032, affecting millions of Americans, including Navajo elders and future retirees who rely on the program for income.
The Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees reported in June that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance trust fund, which pays retirement and survivor benefits, is projected to exhaust its reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032. At that point, incoming payroll taxes would cover about 78% of scheduled benefits, triggering an automatic reduction.
For the Navajo Nation, where unemployment remains high, wage work is limited and the population is aging, the reduction could have significant effects. A Navajo resident who is 56 today would reach retirement eligibility around the time the cuts are projected to begin. Current retirees would face the same percentage reduction in the benefits they already receive.
Social Security has paid out more than it has collected since 2021, according to the trustees.
