St. Michaels celebrates new chapter house as push for local control builds

The new St. Michaels Chapter House stands completed on Nov. 19, 2025, part of a multimillion-dollar renovation that replaces the original 1959 building and expands space for community services.
ST. MICHAELS, Ariz.
Community members and visitors attended the opening of the new St. Michaels Chapter House on Nov. 14.
The multimillion-dollar remake of the community hub, originally built in 1959, opened its new doors for public viewing.
The $7.5 million project, funded largely through federal pandemic recovery dollars, comes as the chapter continues to navigate longstanding structural challenges shaped by the Navajo Nation’s Local Governance Act. The law has influenced the balance between local and central authority for more than 25 years.
“It was a really heartfelt, warming grand opening to see the community enjoy the time that has been long waited for,” said Chapter Vice President Craig Tsosie. “It’s a vision that the community has been envisioning for years and pretty much decades, for them to finally see it fulfilled was great.”
