Tribal leaders say New Mexico’s new Yazzie/Martinez plan shuts out Indigenous voices
BERNALILLO, N.M.
Educators, advocates and tribal leaders sharply criticized New Mexico’s Public Education Department on Friday for excluding Indigenous voices from its latest plan to address the landmark Yazzie-Martinez ruling, saying the proposal remains superficial, underfunded and unendorsed by Native nations.
During a packed forum at the Santa Ana Casino, speakers said the draft plan fails to meet the requirements of the 2018 court order directing the state to fix an education system long found to be constitutionally insufficient for at-risk students, including Native American children. They said the proposal repeats earlier promises, lacks cultural relevance and ignores guidance tribes have offered for years.
