Where did the béeso go? Justin Jones says Navajo housing contracts under legal scrutiny

TÓNANEESDIZÍ

Diné Attorney Justin Jones said during an Oct. 17 livestream that lawsuits filed by his clients seek to uncover how millions of dollars in housing and mortgage-assistance funds were handled by Navajo Nation officials. The Nygren Administration denies wrongdoing and says all federal relief funds were lawfully spent.

“We had no other choice but to file a lawsuit,” Jones said. “The only way to get answers now is through the courts.”

Jones, of the Law Offices of Justine Jones in Farmington, represents Clearwater Construction Partners Inc. and Navajo Partnership for Housing Inc., two Navajo-owned entities registered under the Navajo Business Opportunity Act. Both are plaintiffs in separate legal actions challenging the Nation’s handling of pandemic-era relief funds.

Jones said the cases are not political but are meant to bring transparency. “There’s no accountability, there’s no transparency. There’s a lot of hush-hush. There’s too much of that. How long are we going to be there? How long are we going to continue to do this? Nobody just didn’t take the time to shake the tree now, but that’s what we’re doing. We’re sick of it. We’re tired of it.”
