Lorraine J. Sam

GALLUP — Funeral services for Lorraine J. Sam, 79, of Mexican Springs, New Mexico, will be held Friday, May 10, at 10 a.m., at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup, with Marvin Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Lone Pine Cemetery in Mexican Springs.

Lorraine J. Sam, Feb. 20, 1945 – May 5, 2024

Lorraine was born Feb. 20, 1945, in Mexican Springs, into the Bit’ahnii (Under His Cover Clan), born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). She passed away May 5, 2024, in Mexican Springs.

Lorraine is survived by her sons, Frederick Sam and Bernard Sam; daughters, Loretta Plummer, Carletta Sam, Floretta Sam, Amoretta Sam, and Valetta Tom; and 36 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband, John H. Sam.

Pallbearers will be Randall Plummer, Daniel Plummer, Delvin Bitsie, Marcus King, Pryor Kuhn, and Brady Sam.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ramson Plummer, Frederick Sam, Anderson Lee Sr., Jefferson Lee, Samson Lee, Evans Lee, Bernard Sam, Silas Bitsie, Lathem Plummer, Cameron Sam, Ethan Becenti, and Matthew Kinlinchenni.

A reception will take place at the Mexican Springs Chapter House following services.

CHINLE — Funeral services for Maria Elena Scott-Barker, 59, of Chinle, will be held today, May 9, at 10 a.m., at the Chinle Fatima Catholic Church with Father Blaine officiating. Burial will follow at the Chinle community cemetery.

Maria Elena Scott-Barker, Aug. 14, 1964 – May 2, 2024

Maria was born Aug. 14, 1964, in Fort Defiance, into the Tł’ááshchí’í (Red Bottom People Clan), born for Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People Clan). She passed away May 2, 2024, in Mesa, Arizona.

Maria graduated from Chinle High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University.

Maria is survived by her parents, Donna and Luther Scott; sister, Jeanette Scott; maternal grandparents, Adelle K. Mitchell and Carl N. Gorman; and paternal grandparents, Janet and Dennis Scott.

Honorary pallbearers will be Luther Scott, Aaron Barker, Eugene R. Spencer, Marland Billie, Bobby Beecher, Maynard Mahone, Norman Scott, Edsdel Brown, Mike Christie, Darrel Mitchell, Darrell Clauschee, Ted Scott, Ralph Scott, Charles Barker, and Cecil Sandoval.

A reception will take place at the Chinle Catholic Hall following services.

Joe M. Lee

VANDERWAGEN, N.M. — Funeral services for Joe M. Lee, 84, of Vanderwagen, New Mexico, were held May 7 at the Pine Tree Mission in Vanderwagen, with Eugene Cody officiating. Interment followed at the Pine Tree Cemetery.

Joe was born in Chichiltah, New Mexico, into the Tł’ááshchí’í (Red Bottom People Clan). He passed away April 30, 2024, in Flagstaff.

Joe completed school up to the 8th grade and was a Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a pastor at Pine Tree Mission for 40-plus years and served as vice president for Chichiltah Chapter.

Joe is survived by his son, Leslie Lee; daughter, Laurel Lee; brother, Frank Lee; and granddaughter, Jasmine Natan.

Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Lee; mother, Mary Skeet; father, John Lee; and sister, Mary Alice Lucas.

Pallbearers were Jasmine Natan, Jeremy Natan, Ashley Long, Darrin Joe, Johnny John Charley, and Armando Skeet.

Tyrone T. Ahasteen

INDIAN WELLS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Tyrone Todd Ahasteen, 56, of Indian Wells, Arizona, were held May 3 at the Broken Arrow Church in Indian Wells, with Melvin Tsosie officiating. Interment followed at the Indian Wells community cemetery.

Tyrone was born June 11, 1967, in Keams Canyon, Arizona, into the Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People Clan), born for Nát’oh dine’e Táchii’nii (Tobacco/Red Running Into the Water People Clan). His maternal grandparents are Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge) and paternal grandparents are Tsénjíkiní. He passed away April 29, 2024, at the Flagstaff Medical Center.

Tyrone attended Dilcon Boarding School and Hopi Day School, graduating from Tuba City High School. He was employed as a custodian at W. L. Gore and Associates for more than a decade and held a similar position at the Hozhoni Foundation. Additionally, he provided landscaping services to various residents in the Flagstaff area.

Tyrone enjoyed bowling, playing cards, listening to a wide range of music, and participating in the Special Olympics. He was particularly fond of rodeos, especially bull riding, and his favorite NFL team was the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tyrone is survived by his brothers, Woodie Ahasteen Jr., Darryl Ahasteen, Kirkland Ahasteen, and Antone Ahasteen; and sisters, Betty Begay and June Ahasteen.

Tyrone is preceded in death by his parents, Jeanette and Woodie Ahasteen Sr.; brothers, Michael Ahasteen and Tab Ahasteen; and sister, Marietta Ahasteen.

Pallbearers were Alec Alcott, Nathan Ahasteen, Nathaniel Ahasteen, Sherwood Richardson, Uriah Yazzie, and Wendell Yazzie.

Honorary pallbearers were Woodie Ahasteen Jr., Darryl Ahasteen, Kirkland Ahasteen, and Antone Ahasteen.

Jacquelynn L. Bowman

GANADO, Ariz. — Funeral services for Jacquelynn “Jackie” L. Bowman, 37, of Ganado, Arizona, will be held Friday, May 10, at 10 a.m., at the Ganado Glory Temple Ministries with Pastor Melva Whitehair officiating. Burial will follow at the Ganado cemetery.

Jackie was born Oct. 4, 1986, in San Diego, into the Honágháahnii (One-walks-around Clan), born for Mą’ii deeshgiizhinii (Coyote Pass Clan). She passed away May 6, 2024, in Moriarty, New Mexico.

Jackie attended Snowflake High School and Job Corps in Centerville, Utah. She was employed as a truck driver with Guru Trucking Company.

Jackie loved cooking, music, and dancing. Her passion for driving trucks was the ultimate.

Jackie is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Bowman; mother, Vivian Tabaha; brother, Lindsay Bowman; sisters, Tasha Shirley and Christian Bowman; and grandmother, Lena A. Kee.

Jackie is preceded in death by her sister, Elaine M. Bowman.

A reception will take place at the Ganado Chapter House following services.
