Obituaries for April 16, 2015

Mary M. Woody

ALBUQUERQUE — Funeral services for Mary M. Woody, 67, of Tinian, N.M., will be held Friday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at the Alameda Chapel at Sandia Memory Gardens in Albuquerque, with Pastor Richard Mansfield officiating. Burial will follow in Albuquerque.

Mary was born into the Hashtl’ishnii (Mud Clan), born for Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle Clan). She died April 9, 2015, in Pueblo Pintado, N.M.

As a homemaker, Mary enjoyed spending time with family, sewing, cooking, puzzles, powwows, horse races, horses, sheep, and was a Broncos fan.

Mary is survived by her husband, Harry R. Woody; sons, Harold Woody, Hardy Woody, Gregory Woody, and Harvey Woody; daughters, Marian Morales, Marcia Haines, and Marlo Woody; father, Joe Montoya Sr.; brothers, Phillip Montoya, Joe Montoya Jr., and Palito Montoya; sisters, Alice Johnson, Betty Woody, Annie Lovato, Evelyn Montoya, Lilia Chavez, Marilyn George, Ethelyn Peshlakai, and Joelyn Woody; and 32 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mary is preceded in death by Ethel Montoya and Kee Montoya.

Pallbearers will be Varian Woody, Myles Sylvester, Tevin Woody, Harvey Woody Jr., Jeremiah Woody, Dishon Jefferson, Zachery Woody, and Elijah Woody.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Woody, Hardy Woody, Gregory Woody, and Harvey Woody.

A reception will take place at the Tinian Fellowship Hall following services.

Leandro Jodie

GALLUP — Funeral services for Leandro Jodie, 50, will be held today, April 16, at 2 p.m. at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Leandro was born Oct. 4, 1964, in Grants, N.M., into the Tó’aheedliinii (Water Flow Together Clan), born for Ma’ii deeshgiizhinii (Coyote Pass Clan). His nali is Tábaahá (Water’s Edge); chei is Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House). He died April 13, 2015, in Albuquerque.

Leandro attended Crownpoint Elementary School and graduated from Crownpoint High School in 1982. He attended Navajo Community College in Tsaile, Ariz., and TV-I in Albuquerque.

Leandro was employed as security with the Crownpoint Institute of Technology, bingo coordinator at Isleta, bingo/Herrera Coach, program director at KGAK radio station in Gallup, former vice president at Becenti Chapter, and rodeo announcer for IJRA, NNRCA, NMJBRA, various organizations, and Navajo Nation country bands.

Leandro was a fan/DJ for Stateline Band, Eastern Fair Board member, and sheepherder. He believed and practiced his cultural and traditional Navajo ways. He was always a friend to all and a role model to his many nieces, nephews, IJRA, and bull riding children.

Leandro is survived by his son, Wacey B. Jodie; daughters, Lisa M. Jodie and Summer L. Jodie; brothers, Hollis W. Jodie, Willie V. Jodie, Sheridan O. Jodie, and Quentin R. Jodie; sisters, Orlynda Jodie, Michaelyn Jodie, Quenteena Jodie, and Cindy L. Jodie; mother, Esther A. Jodie; and nephew, Burke L. Williams.

Leandro is preceded in death by his father, Willie Jodie Sr.; and nalis, Man and Woman.

Harold Charley

LUPTON, Ariz. — Funeral services for Harold Charley, 60, were held April 13 at the Lupton Valley Community Church. Interment followed at the family plot in Lupton.

Harold was born Feb. 4, 1955, in Fort Defiance, into the Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan), born for Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan). His chei is DibŽlzhini (Black Sheep); nali is Tótsohnii (Big Water). He died April 7, 2015, in Camp Verde, Ariz.

Harold attended Hunters Point School, Tohatchi School, and graduated from Sanders-Valley High School in 1973. He enlisted in the Army in 1975 stationed in Fort Riley, Kan. He loved to joke, cook, play bingo, be around children, and tend to his livestock.

Harold is survived by his siblings, Jane Yazzie of Lupton, Herman Charley of Lupton, Marilyn Yazzie of Lupton, Jeanette Benally of Coyote Canyon, N.M., Theresa Charley of Lupton, and Hamilton Charley of Lupton.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Mary Charley; and siblings, Herbert Charley, Norman Charley, and Rebecca Yazzie.

Pallbearers were Stanley Silversmith, Olsen Yazzie, Perry Yazzie, Vitale Charley, Brian Charley, and Troy Charley.

Rollie Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Deswood Bitsoi Sr.

CHINLE — Funeral services for Deswood Bitsoi Sr., 86, of Chinle, were held April 13 at the Grace Fellowship Church. Interment followed at the family plot in Chinle.

Deswood was born Jan. 14, 1929, in Chinle, into the Tódich’ii’nii (Bitter Water Clan), born for Bit’ahnii (Under His Cover Clan). He died April 8, 2015, in Chinle.

Deswood attended Chinle Boarding School and was employed with National Park Service for 29 years.

Deswood is survived by his sons, Bennie Bitsoi, Dannie Bitsoi, and Edmond Bitsoi, all of Chinle, Deswood Bitsoi Jr. of McAlester, Okla., Henry (Hank) Bitsoi, and Anslem Bitsoi of Thoreau, N.M.; daughters, Bonnie Bitsoi of Phoenix, Connie Bitsoi of Blue Gap, Ariz., Donnie and Pennie Bitsoi of Rough Rock, Ariz., Sharon Bitsoi of Scottsdale, Ariz., Charlotte (Moll) McDonald, and Annie Pasquela; brothers, Joseph Bitsoi of Ririe, Idaho, Bennie Bitsoi of Chinle, and Arthur Tracy of Nazlini, Ariz.; sisters, Christine Bitsoi of Chinle, and Lydia Bitsoi of Chandler, Ariz.; and 54 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.

Deswood is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith Bitsoi; daughter Rebecca; granddaughter Felipita; and sisters, Sarah Davis and Rose Ann Bitsoi.

Honorary pallbearers were Deswood Bitsoi Jr., Garrick Billy, Myron Yazzie, and Bennie Holtsoi.

Silver Creek Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
