Nichole A. Alex

WINSLOW, Ariz. – Graveside service for Nichole Alexis Alex, 40, of Gallup (Dilkon, Arizona), was held June 6 at the Desert View Cemetery in Winslow, Arizona.

Nichole was born March 19, 1985, in Gallup, into the ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan), born for Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle Clan). Her nálí is Tótsohnii (Big Water); cheii is Tł’ááshchí’í (Red Bottom People).

Nichole Alexis Alex, March 19, 1985 – June 1, 2025

A devoted wife, mother, and fierce advocate for Native American communities, Nichole passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones in Flagstaff.

Nichole received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and a juris doctorate from the University of New Mexico of Law. She was employed as an associate judge at Pueblo of Zuni.

Nichole enjoyed traveling, gardening, hiking, community organizing, volunteering, and Indigenous community advocacy.

Nichole was a strong Diné Asdzání, filled with deep compassion and unwavering strength, dedicating her life to justice, service, and the well-being of others. Her advocacy work made a lasting impact, and her ability to lead with courage and empathy inspired all who knew her.

Beyond her professional legacy, Nichole was the heart of her family – an incredible partner and a loving, guiding presence for her son, Rey Mato, who carries forward her spirit and values. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

Nichole is survived by her husband, Robert Silva; mother, Bernadine Alex; son, Rey Mato Silva; and siblings, Clint Alex, Courtney Alex and Peyton Alex.

Nichole is preceded in death by her grandparents, Nellie and Felix Nez Sr.

Pallbearers were Clint Alex, James Begay, Vernon Miller, Brandon Bitsuie, and Riley Coleman.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Silva, Felix Nez Jr., Gary Nez, Frankie Bahe, Calvin Bahe, Jason Bahe, Fidel Bahe, Marshall Medicine Bear, and Marcus/Dan Gonzalez.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a yet-to-be-created endowed scholarship for Indigenous students whose career pursuits include advocacy for Indigenous communities, environmental justice, juvenile justice, children’s law, or public policy work at the University of Arizona.
