FORT DEFIANCE – The Ganado boys basketball team had 13 players suit up on Tuesday night and all but two scored.
That complete team effort helped the Hornets secure a 60-34 win over Window Rock at the Bee Hółdzil Fighting Scouts Event Center in Fort Defiance. The Hornets improved to 3-13 overall and 1-4 in 3A North Region play.

Window Rock interim boys basketball coach Brandon Lee watches from the sideline during Window Rock’s home game against the Ganado Hornets on Tuesday night at the Bee Hółdzil Fighting Scouts Event Center in Fort Defiance. The Scouts fell short by a 60-34 count.
“I think for the boys, it’s just a mentality change,” Ganado coach Korey Curtis said. “I mean, we’ve been progressing all season since the beginning of the season. It’s just not a small group, it’s all of them. We have a lot of underclassmen, and they got some playing time tonight. We needed that because I’m going to count on them.”
The 26-point win came on the heels of the Window Rock Unified School District placing some members of its varsity players on suspension due to an incident that happened at a tournament in Phoenix area a couple of weeks ago.
With that, the Hornets played against a much younger Scouts team.
“We really didn’t know what to expect coming into this game,” Curtis said, “but it was just keeping that mindset of stepping onto the court and working hard.”
Of the 11 players that scored, junior forward Romeo Baldwin was the only Ganado player to reach double figures as he finished with 11 points.
Senior Kohl Curley added nine while sophomore Tyre Nichols chipped in eight.
For Window Rock, Kenneth Brown finished with a team-high 10 points while freshmen Aiden Destea and Matthew Henderson chipped in six points apiece.
“I think the boys came out a little scared in the first quarter,” Window Rock interim coach Brandon Lee said. “You know, I tried my best to get them ready and I let them know what the expectations were, which is to go out and compete, and give it 110% effort.”
Despite the being undersized, the Scouts trailed 21-10 at the break. Late in the third, Window Rock got within 30-22 after a basket by Henderson with 2:16 remaining until the fourth.
“Coming out of halftime, I let them know that we’re still in it,” Lee said. “I’m glad that we got within eight, but unfortunately, I just think my boys got tired.
“Win or lose, I was happy how hard they came out,” he added.
Both teams will be in action on Friday night with Window Rock traveling to Monument Valley tonight while Ganado is at Page.
