FARMINGTON, N.M.
The Santa Fe Indian School girl’s basketball team has never stopped being the Running Braves.
Though the team is led by a new coach and has added some fresh faces to the roster, they remain loyal to their longtime personality.
“People know us as the Running Braves, we’re known for our defense, our pressure, and running up and down that court,” said SFIS senior Victoria Lovato. “We want to be known for speed (and) as the Lady Braves who can run and gun.”
Lovato said they want to be identified by those traits even though they are short compared to most teams.
Since last summer, the Braves have been working on adding to their skills sets under new head coach Lanse Carter, who coach at rival school Pojoaque High.
“All of us have the ability to score and help the team…we’ve had four to five different leading scorers this whole year, with that being said, we’re definitely sharing the basketball and looking for good shots,” he said. “We’re attacking the basket well, especially in transition, we’re also finding open shooters when we penetrate inside the lane.”
