WINDOW ROCK

It’s an ambitious task, but the Page boys cross country team knows they have a legitimate shot at it.

The Sand Devils are entering the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III boys state meet as the favorites and they are looking to get all seven members in the top 21 in Saturday’s race at Cave Creek Golf Course in north Phoenix.

The Sand Devils are looking to get all seven members in the top 21 at the Division III state meet on Saturday in Phoenix.

“They’re ready to roll, they’re ready to fly,” Page coach Tim Martin said of his team that has won the last three Division III state titles.

The AIA state meet has eight races on tap starting with the Division II girls race at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Division III girls race at 8:55 a.m. The Division II boys will start at 9:20 a.m. followed by the Division III boys at 9:45 a.m.

After a short break, the Division I boys race is set to begin at 12:45 p.m. followed by the Division IV girls at 1:10 p.m. The Division I girls starts at 1:35 p.m. followed by the Division IV boys at 2 p.m.

Expectations are high for the Sand Devils and Martin is expecting ALA-Foothills to give them a run for their money.

“On paper, it looks likes ALA-Foothills is the second-best team,” Martin said. “They’ve made some improvements and they got a pretty solid 1-2-3. Right now, their 4-5 runners look like they’re a little too far back, but you never know. Kids step up and things change.

“We just have to run a solid race at state,” he added. “And all seven of my guys want to be all-state and they all want to be in the top 21 this year. We’re gonna win if we can do that.”

In previous years, Martin said the Sand Devil program has never had all seven members make all-state, but in 2018 they came close when they had six members place 1-2-3-13-18-19 overall.

“We’ve never had all seven in and that’d be the goal probably for us,” Martin said. “We’re going to have to pack in there. The times are going to be fast so our seven have to step it up if they want to be in that group of all-staters.”

Page is led by senior standout Symond Martin, who has posted the fastest time of 14:43.7 statewide this season. The rest of the Sand Devils include seniors Max Reid Brydan Bennett and Park Adams, junior Jaiden Jordan, and freshmen Max Martin and Stephaun Greyeyes.

In the Division IV boys, the Hopi Bruins are seeking to get on podium and individually St. Michael Indian School junior Evans Tracy is looking to challenge for a state crown.
