Defense carries the day for Pinon
FORT DEFIANCE
Pinon’s defense was the key as the Eagles outlasted the Many Farms Lobos, 20-18, in a football season opener for both teams.
Despite the victory, Pinon head coach Bronson Yazzie said the Eagles have a lot of work ahead of them.
“We made mental mistakes that hurt us,” he said. “We had a lot of penalties. We would move the ball and penalties would stop our momentum. Defensively, the kids did a good job. Out defense had five quarterback sacks and our defensive secondary knocked down four passes. We have work to do, defensively.”
Many Farms’ Collin Tsosie opened the game with an impressive kickoff return. Tsosie went 70 yards and scored the game’s first touchdown.
“Our special team played a good ball game,” Many Farms head coach Gary Begay said. “We had a kickoff return for a touchdown and our punt return team moved the ball well. Our receiving team on kick offs and punts did a good job blocking for our ball carrier. I’m looking for our special teams to continue to improve.”
The Lobos extended its lead to 8-0 in the second quarter as the Lobos’ defense swarmed the Eagles by recording a two-point safety.
“Our defense did a good job,” Begay said.
