New year means fresh start for Window Rock
WINDOW ROCK
With his team a year older and a year stronger, Window Rock coach Wilbur Begay Jr. is encouraged about the upcoming 2018 season.
Last year the Scouts were nearly shutout in every game so they are looking to end a 10-game losing streak that dates back to the 2016 season.
“We’ll have a better season than the last,” Begay said. “We are making sure our hard work will pay off. We did put in a lot of time this offseason.”
New to Window Rock’s schedule is a pair of New Mexico games. On Friday, the Scouts will kickoff the season with an away game at Fort Wingate. After playing at Rock Point the following week, Window Rock will host Gallup on Sept. 7.
“We have a good schedule,” Begay said. “We start our season in New Mexico with some good teams. We give everyone respect and will never overlook anyone. Every team we play this season is looking to beat us and we will do the same.”
Begay said he has three key returners who are seniors. They include quarterback Tyrell Boyd, running back Cobren Nez and tight end Demetrius Begay, who will serve as the team’s defensive play caller.
Begay said their leadership will factor heavily into Window Rock’s campaign.
