In any sport, learning fundamentals is the key to success.

Kids attending the recent Window Rock Little Scouts Football Camp received quality, intense instruction, which emphasized on fundamentals from Fighting Scouts head football coach Greg Barker and coaching staff during its inaugural three-day camp at Judd Avey Memorial Stadium in Fort Defiance.

The three-day camp featured 18 campers, ages 5 to 12. Camp coaching staff helped as campers went through warm-up drills to begin the day.

“This is our first football camp for young kids,” Barker said. “The kids had a good time and the coaching staff had a good time working with the kids.”

Barker said Fighting Scouts assistant coach Jonathan Pablo made a presentation on the importance of physical fitness.

“Jonathan is knowledgeable,” Barker said. “The kids listened as he talked about being active. He worked with the kids on drills. The kids worked hard and the kids did a great job working out. He worked with them on fundamentals. The kids responded well.”

Barker said the kids are willing to learn. He said when the kids are taught the fundamentals, they have to continue practicing it.
He said the coaching staff was impressed with the 18 kids who participated in the camp.

“As coaching staff, we are pleased with the number of kids who participated,” Barker said. “The camp was initially set for the first week of June. But due to summer school, we had to have a week earlier. By moving the camp a week earlier than anticipated, we didn’t know what our camp numbers would be. We got a good turnout.”
