With depth being a major concern the Wingate football team hobbled into last Friday’s matchup with Santa Fe Indian School.

The Bears started the game with its backup quarterback but in a midst of rally junior Marcel Wilson went out momentarily with an ankle injury.

“We have a lot of injuries with our quarterbacks,” Wingate coach Billy Badonie Jr. said following his team’s 20-8 loss to the SFIS Braves.

The second-year coach said his starting quarterback is not going to be available until next month so the Bears had to make do with what they had.
That included replacing the injured quarterback with junior Brandon Badonie, who usually starts at tailback, late in the third quarter before Wilson finished out the game.

SFIS, which improved to 2-1, pretty much controlled the line of scrimmage in the opening half. The Braves held Wingate to only 26 yards while the visiting team amassed 159 yards on 13 carries.

SFIS had four guys run the ball with senior Ryan Luarkie and junior DeShawn Tenorio accounting for most of those yardages.

“They make things happen and the whole team runs around those two guys,” SFIS coach Wayne Thompson said, while adding that senior middle linebacker Matt Trujillo also plays a vital role on the defensive end.
