Shiprock tight end trying out for national team
WINDOW ROCK
Tyris Newton knows what his bread and butter is.
He is going to make the most of it this weekend when he’ll try out for the U.S. National Team in Denver against some of the most decorated football players in a two-day regional development camp.
“First of all I am excited that I got invited,” said Newton, who played his first organized football two years ago. “I can’t wait to play.”
The 6-foot-2, 160-pound Shiprock tight end was one of three players from his high school team that got invited but he is the only one who is going to pursue this opportunity.
“I want to develop new skills,” he said. “I want to be better. I want to develop leadership on and off the field.”
If he makes the team, Newton will play against some of the best teams from Canada and around the world.
“This is a big plus for Tyris, even if he doesn’t make the team,” his mom, Bernie Tyler, said. “U.S. Football is an amateur league but it gives individual players the opportunity to excel in their positions. They get one-on-one coaching from Division I coaches and who knows where this could lead Tyris?”
