Tohatchi adds new wrinkle to their offense
TOHATCHI, N.M.
With a revamped offense the Tohatchi Cougars are starting to have a knack of finding the end zone.
Such was the case last Friday night as the Cougars celebrated homecoming week with a dominating 50-6 win over visiting Zuni.
The Cougars reinstituted the old wishbone offense made famous under the Oklahoma Sooners back in the 1980s.
“Our coach brought back the wishbone offense,” senior captain Isaiah Begay said.
“They won a national title with that and I kind of brought it back,” Tohatchi head coach Douglas Ballard added. “It hasn’t been used for 20 years and it has rejuvenated this team. Basically it’s something different but it’s been proven to work.”
It certainly helps that the second-year coach has the personnel to do it as the Cougars have won four straight games since their season opening loss with Thoreau.
Erik Becenti exemplified how successful their new offensive scheme works as the senior quarterback completed 4-of-7 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. He also had one touchdown run of 67 yards.
The Cougars had other options with senior Tarringtino Begay rushing the ball eight times for 112 yards with two touchdowns while teammate Karlex Capitan caught three receptions for 129 yards and scored from 51 and 75 yards.
“We have a good quarterback and we have some big running backs,” Ballard said.
