FORT DEFIANCE

For the second time in his illustrious college career, Navajo Technical University senior archer Filiberto Vecenti garnered the 2015 3D United States Intercollegiate Archery Championship national title at Sahara Woods, Ill.

Vecenti won his first national championship in 2013 as a sophomore. Additionally, Vecenti earned his third All-American and second All-Academic Scholar/Athlete honor. He has earned two target archery All-America and one 3D All-America. En route to his coveted national title, Vecenti chalked up 351 points in the Men’s Recurve category.

“I’m a senior at Navajo Technical University and it was goal of mine to complete my college career with a national championship,” Vecenti said. “I practiced all summer on my own. I worked out in preparation for the fall archery season.”

NTU head archery coach Clyde Henderson said the fall season happened so quick and Vecenti’s success wasn’t surprising. “Mr. (Filiberto) Vecenti is Mr. Consistent, when it comes to performing on the course or field,” Henderson said. “As a coach, you want your team to perform at the national level, but also to get it done in the classroom. I’m proud that Filiberto is staying true to his goals to graduate and maintain eligibility. His teammates look up to him, so he is a role model for the younger team members.”
