‘Just be smooth’: Twin Lakes cowboy Roy Begay tops tie-down field

CROWNPOINT

The stars aligned for Roy Begay on Sunday afternoon.

With a horse that’s still green, Begay captured another Eastern Navajo Fair crown in the tie-down roping with a winning time of 9.81 seconds.

“I knew my calf was good, and my horse worked well,” Begay said of Beaver. “He’s only four years old and this is probably his seventh rodeo now.”

Begay topped a strong field of contenders as he bettered the 10.55 run turned in by Jerome Ben, who completed his run in Sunday’s slack.

“I knew I had to get out first, and then rope and just be smooth,” Begay said of his mindset coming in. “Everything came into place, and it worked out.”
