Sunday’s rat race for Mexican Springs, New Mexico cowboy Dennison Boone was well worth it.
Despite feeling fatigue and worn out, the 36-year-old cowboy captured three all-around titles in one day.
He started his day winning the 54th Annual Ralph Johnson Memorial Rodeo, followed by his win at the Sells & Sells Production Open Show Rodeo in Round Rock, Arizona.
He capped Sunday’s slew of rodeos by capturing his third all-around title at the CNRA Lukachukai Pioneer Days Rodeo.
“I actually got started with a prorodeo in Grand Junction on Saturday night and it didn’t go too well,” Boone said. “I missed a good steer for my partner Trey Begay in the team roping and in the calf roping, my calf kicked so that was a little upsetting.”
After pulling his rig home after 2 a.m. early Sunday morning, Boone got back on the road four hours later to make the Ralph Johnson rodeo where he placed third in the team roping with Begay as the two posted an 8.25 run.
His calf roping run, however, didn’t go so well, as his calf kicked out of his tie despite making a 10.4 run.
From there they made the trek up north to Round Rock where Boone placed third in the tie-down event with an 11.11 run. In the team roping, he earned a first-place check with Begay as the two cowboys posted a 5.12 run.
After that rodeo, the duo made the rodeo in Lukachukai as they had a three-hour break to rest. At Lukachukai, Boone placed first in the tie-down roping with a 9.83 run.
In the team roping, Boone earned two checks by placing fourth with Blaine Redhorse (6.24) and sixth with Begay (6.38).
“After those runs, I kind of solidified the all-around there,” Boone said.
Of the three rodeos, Boone said winning the all-around at the Ralph Johnson Memorial Rodeo was the biggest surprise since he only placed in one event. Nonetheless, he was the highest money winner among contestants that entered in two or more events as he was awarded a coveted all-around saddle.
“That was huge and that was the cherry on top for my weekend,” Boone said. “Man, three all-around wins in one weekend. That’s crazy and that kind of makes up for the mishap we had in Colorado.”
Boone says hitting all those three rodeos on Sunday seemed reasonable on paper, but it proved to an arduous task.
“I was exhausted,” Boone said. “Some of that exhaustion came from work. I think last week I put in 63 hours in five days, and I was getting four, five hours of sleep a night and that contributed to my tiredness.
“The tiredness was there, and the exhaustion was there,” he added. “It’s kind of funny that I told my wife and my friends that I didn’t want to rodeo (on Sunday). My body was hurting, and my joints were hurting but I force myself up and I figured I would get some rest somewhere.”
And while he earned some much-needed rest on Monday during the Memorial Day holiday, Boone will be back it this week with his hectic work schedule and the two prorodeos he’s hitting this week.
On Thursday morning, he’s entered in the team roping competition in Moab, Utah with Begay. Then on Saturday night, he’s getting his team roping run with Begay at the Home of the Navajo PRCA Rodeo in Window Rock. His tie-down draw is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
