AIA Division IV Championships: Holbrook sprinter pleased with making 100-meter finals

GLENDALE, Ariz.

Holbrook sprinter Williams Kinds was looking for some validation.

He received that by making the finals of the 100-meter race at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV Championships on Saturday.

“It felt really good,” Kinds said. “All the glory to God. Of course, He got me here first in the first place and I couldn’t have done it without Him.”

Kinds took seventh in the finals as he crossed the finish line in 11.56 seconds. He ran a much faster time a day earlier in Friday’s prelims when he clocked in at 11.25.

“You know it feels good being here,” Kinds said. “You know, at my school, nobody has made it to the finals for quite some time. I think I’m the first one to do it in like 10 years. I hope this encourages everybody else back in Holbrook that they can get here too.”

Kinds also earned a qualification in the open 200 for the divisional meet as he posted a time of 23.51, which was 18th overall in the prelims.

“Competing here at state is really different from all the other meets,” Kinds said. “You know, those other meets are just like practice and when you come here it’s the real deal because you have everybody that is in the top of the state here.”

And while making the finals was validation for all the hard work he’s put into his sprinting training, Kinds is looking to use this experience for next season.

“I want to improve,” he said. “I want to practice over the summer, and in the winter I’m gonna try to do some indoor meets. I’m going to lift, too, so that way I can get faster.”

The Roadrunners also had Chelsey Begay compete in the girls shot put as she placed 10th overall with a throw of 31 feet, 3 inches.

In the 400, Tyler Woody placed 16th in the prelims with a time of 52.58 seconds while distance runner Ian Masayesva earned a 12th-place showing in the 3200 (9:59.62) and a 16th-place effort in the 1600 (4:41.09).
