FORT WINGATE, N.M.

Last year’s second place finish at the New Mexico Class 1-2A state boys cross country meet represented a high point for the Alamo Navajo athletic program.

That finished salvaged some lingering feelings from the year before as the Cougars missed taking home some hardware after losing the third place trophy in 2013 on a tiebreaker to Tsé Yi’ Gai.

Fast-forward six months, Alamo Navajo is hoping to convert some of that success at next month’s state track meet.

On Saturday, the Cougars showed why they’re a team to look out for as they almost lapped the six-team field by winning nine events at the Wingate Shashbitoo’ Invite.

The Cougars racked up 132 points, which was 62 points better than second place finisher Crownpoint.

“I am real proud of the kids because a lot of people don’t know Alamo Navajo,” first-year Cougar coach Kent Tomah said. “They work hard and we as a staff we’re always pushing them to be better and get after it.”

Alamo Navajo senior Anthony Guerro led the team with 23 points and earned the high-point male athlete. Guerro entered four events, winning the 3200 (11:41), 1600 (5:21) and 800 (2:19).

He also helped the medley team to a second place finish with a time of 4:29.

“All of the hard work I put in is paying off,” said Guerro, who earlier this year hit the state qualification marks in both the mile and two-mile.
