Rain doesn’t damper Sanchez, Laguna-Acoma boys
REHOBOTH, N.M.
A passing storm made thing miserable for most of the people at the Rehoboth Invitational last Friday.
The showers reared itself during the varsity boys race and it sent some spectators scurrying to take cover.
As for the runners, it made the course a bit treacherous. Despite the predicament Laguna-Acoma senior Jacob Sanchez embraced it.
“I am not going to lie to you but it was slippery,” he said of the course. “I was grabbing onto branches and poles when I was hitting those tight corners but running in the rain is the type of climate I like to run in.”
Over the summer, Sanchez trained under those conditions and being Native American it connects himself with Mother Nature.
“That’s the beauty of it, running in the rain,” he said.
Nonetheless, the slight shower did explain why he wasn’t too satisfied with his winning time of 17 minutes, four seconds.
“I ran a 15:43 at McGaffey,” he said of the practice meet two weeks ago, adding that he’s looking for consistency.
As the Hawks top runner, Sanchez led his team to a first place finish in the team standings. Laguna-Acoma placed five runners in the top 12 and finished with a team score of 32 points.
Eighth grader Colton Salvador finished fifth and Deion Lukee-Valdo followed him immediately in sixth place. Christopher Carrillo and Cameron Sanchez were ninth and 12th, respectively.
“I am proud of what they did today,” Laguna-Acoma coach Daniel Otero said. “Despite the weather the kids knew what they needed to do.”
