After escaping from the scene of a domestic violence call with a hostage and eluding police for 16 hours, a suspect was arrested about noon Wednesday, Navajo Nation Police Capt. Bobby Etsitty confirmed.

Kevin Ray Yellowman, 33, of Valley Store, Ariz., is expected to face federal charges.

According to Navajo Nation Public Safety Director Jesse Delmar, a Navajo Nation police officer responded to a domestic violence call near Valley Store about 8 p.m. Tuesday. The officer attempted to arrest Yellowman, but he grabbed her gun, which discharged through the holster during the struggle.

Yellowman then allegedly fled the scene with a female hostage.

Chinle area schools were on lockdown Wednesday as police and FBI agents searched for Yellowman.
Etsitty said he did not have the details of the arrest, but confirmed that Yellowman is in custody.

Yellowman is a registered sex offender with a previous conviction for aggravated sexual abuse.
