Area prep volleyball teams using summer tournaments to build team chemistry

The Window Rock Lady Scouts hosted a round robin volleyball tournament last week for a handful of area high school teams prepping for the upcoming season.

The one-day tournament had several schools enter multiple teams with the Monument Valley Mustangs winning the gold bracket over the host Lady Scouts in Fort Defiance.
“One thing this tournament does is – it allows team to get together because they don’t play all the time,” Window Rock coach Ashley Mitchell said. “They’re mostly competing in basketball, so the main purpose and goal was for them to play together.”
There were 18 teams registered with MV entering three separate teams.
“We have our underclassmen group of freshmen and sophomores, and we have two upperclassmen group, which is a mixture of juniors and seniors,” longtime MV coach Rennell Gilmore said of her group.
