Lady Bears knock off Bloomfield to retain driver’s seat
FORT WINGATE
It’s no accident that the Wingate Lady Bears are off to a great start.
The Bears are sitting pretty with a 15-2 record, which includes a 6-1 mark atop the league standing.
All season long the Bears have looked to its veteran group headed by senior middle hitters Keziah Pine and Ashanti Antonio. Both players are relentless and they attack the ball with confidence.
In last Thursday’s win over Bloomfield they combined for 29 kills with Pine leading the way with 18. The Lady Bobcats pushed Wingate in the first two sets before the Bears shifted into another gear and closed them out with a 27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14 win.
“I switched my rotation and I had to take Ashanti out because she wasn’t feeling well,” Wingate coach Karen Malone said when asked about the final result of the match, specifically the dominant performance her team displayed in the latter half of the contest.
“The girls that came in fill in those spot and they played well together,” Malone continued. “That has been one thing that we have been working on, getting that cohesiveness going to where everyone is working as a team.”
