In her home arena, at her home fair, Paige Dale showed her hometown what a local cowgirl can do.
Dale, 16, from Shiprock, N.M., took home the ultimate prize at the Navajo Nation Rodeo Association Northern Navajo Fair Rodeo held Oct. 3-4 after being named the all-around cowgirl.
Dale competed in the ladies breakaway event and won the ladies barrel-racing event in 17.156, pursing $1,264.69 in the event. By winning the all-around she pocketed an additional $1,000 bonus.
The Shiprock High School student said it was a nice surprise to kick off the 2015-2016 season.
“I was surprised. It’s exciting,” she said. “It makes me more confident and makes me want to even go to bigger rodeos.”
Dale said the weekend was her first time roping in the ladies breakaway event and that she is fairly new to roping.
She said she treated it like any other rodeo and was happy to see that she found early success in an event that isn’t very common to her.
“It was a good win. It was almost like any other rodeo, but this one was the beginning starting a new season, so I wanted to get up there on my points,” she said. “I’m barely roping, I know how to rope, but this is my first time roping in the open rodeo.”
