FORT DEFIANCE

With the numbers they put up last Thursday night the Window Rock volleyball team has every reason to start thinking about dancing again.

The Lady Scouts bucked a trend and increased its chancing of making next month’s Division III state playoffs by outlasting perennial powerhouse Tuba City. With that, the Scouts hope to end a two-year state playoff drought as they moved up to No. 23 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association poll earlier this week.

“I think the last time we beat them was during the state playoffs in 2011,” Window Rock coach Amelia Holtsoi said of the Warriors. “They had us two games down and we came back to beat them in five.”

The Scouts needed five sets to get by Tuba City in this seesaw affairs as Window Rock finished the game with, 32 kills, 16 aces and 12 stuff blocks. The set scores were 25-10, 24-26, 25-14, 19-25, 15-9.

“I know some of the girls are battling colds and sickness but that shouldn’t be an excuse,” Tuba City coach Harlan Barlow said. “They just need to be a little more consistent and put these types of games away.”
