The decision by members of the Navajo Tribal Council’s Advisory Committee to ban the director of DNA-People’s Legal Services from the Navajo Reservation has created a lot of controversy, not only in Window Rock but in Washington, D.C., as well.

What happened on Aug. 6, 1968, on the Navajo Reservation had never happened before and stories about it made news all over the country. The Washington Post even put it on the front page two days later.

The Navajo Times has been running stories every week or two promoting the candidacy of Lloyd House who was running to become the first Native American to be elected to Congress.

Officials for DNA-People’s Legal Services squared off this week with Jody Matthews, superintendent of the Chinle Public School District, over the issue of whether the district is providing free lunches to students from low-income families.
