Two Grey Hills park hosts skate jam, seed planting on Earth Day

TWO GREY HILLS, N.M.

More than 100 young people and their families turned out at the Two Grey Hills Skate Park last week for the Protect the Land Skate Jam, an Earth Day gathering that paired skateboarding lessons with native seed planting, art-making and a park clean-up.

The event was hosted by 4KINSHIP, a Native-owned creative studio in Santa Fe, and the Diné Skate Garden Project, a Navajo-led initiative that has built skateparks and run mentorship programs in the Navajo Nation. Partners included Nation Skate Youth, the New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund and Navajo Power and Home.

The skate park, built in 2022, is one of the few dedicated outdoor recreation spaces in the remote regions of the Navajo Nation. The day’s activities tied movement to land stewardship and brought young skaters together with elders, families and tribal leaders.

Amy Denet Deal, the founder of 4KINSHIP, said the turnout from partner organizations and volunteers shaped the tone of the day.

“It takes a village, and it felt like such an important day to celebrate our commitment to the next generation,” Denet Deal said.
