The sound of the big drum will carry through Navajo Square on Friday, Sept. 11, when the 78th Annual Navajo Nation Fair dedicates a full day to physical, mental and spiritual healing with a gourd dance and health fair under the theme “Navajo Healing Navajo.”

The health fair runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Navajo Square, Tent A, east of Gorman Hall, with educational presentations, health screenings and information booths from tribal programs. The gourd dance follows from noon to 5 p.m. at the same location, and the day closes with a contest powwow from 7-11 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Arena.

Mike Salabiye, one of the event’s coordinators, works for the Navajo Nation Division of Behavioral Mental Health Services.

“Healing Navajo is a part of the theme with the Navajo Nation Department of Health, as well as the Navajo Nation Division of Behavioral Mental Health Services, who I work for,” Salabiye said. “That’s kind of a daily thing with us in terms of our goals, objectives, our missions, anything to do with healing. Making things better for our people.”
