Just because Marlyssa Ann Jim didn’t win the Navajo Nation Fair Princess title last year didn’t mean she could not try again.
In fact she won the title on her second try this past weekend during the 69th annual Navajo Nation Fair Contest Powwow.
“The reason I chose to run is because there is this young girl I work with who dresses traditional everyday,” Jim said of a receptionist and pageant coordinator for Leupp Schools, Inc.
“She’s one my royalties and she dressed traditional everyday and she was bullied,” Jim said. “She was bullied for the way she dressed.
“I, myself, was bullied,” she added. “I wanted to help out as much as I can. I wanted her to look at herself and for her to feel good about herself.”
Jim is Tódik’ozhi (Bitter Water Clan) born for the Kinyaa’aanii (Towering House Clan). Her cheii is Naaneest’ézhí Tachii’nii (Charcoal Streaked Division of the red Running into Water) and her nalí is of the T’aneeszahnii (Tangled People Clan).
