With the soothing crackling of fire and the subtle beat of a drum, listeners are welcomed into the “Real Native Roots: Untold Stories” podcast.

Cartoonist Jack Ahasteen of the Navajo Times is not a fan of notoriety. In fact, during the most contentious days of the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute, he often didn’t sign his own cartoons.

“Getting lost is the best part of trail running,” Marlinda Bedonie said with a chuckle as we shielded our eyes from the morning sun, searching for our cars.

For the past year, young leaders like Shandiin Herrera helped organize critical relief efforts to communities across the Navajo and Hopi nations.
