Although there have been many tests that have come up negative, the increase in cases in such a short time proves the public is not taking this virus seriously enough and isn’t staying home, Nez said.

Lt. Randy Frank, with the Navajo Nation Fire Department, is normally stationed out in Twin Arrows but on a windy Sunday afternoon he was on the road headed toward Chilchinbeto, Arizona, in his fire unit.

As of Tuesday there were 10 more COVID-19 cases on Navajo.

But despite the loud echo from leaders, officials, and public safety and closing of some restaurants and other businesses, a heavy number of cars and people were still seen at grocery stores, banks, and gas stations throughout the weekend. 

It’s been less than a week since the first two cases of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation were reported.  While joint tribal and IHS epidemiologist teams are working to stop the virus’s spread, the degree of contact of contagious individuals and the subsequent degree of exposure is unknown.
