250 NM students might not be allowed to attend Window Rock schools

WINDOW ROCK

Window Rock Unified School District (WRUSD) is currently working on options that would allow students from the Navajo Nation that live on the New Mexico side, to continue attending its schools.

If an agreement with Gallup-McKinley County Schools is not reached then students might have to find a new school district in their respective locations.

Lynette Michalski, superintendent for WRUSD, said the State of Arizona doesn’t allow out-of-state students to attend schools in Arizona unless an agreement has been made between Arizona and the state the student is coming from.

In this case, it’s New Mexico.

“It really affects a lot of our kids,” Michalski said, adding that the district has about 250 students from New Mexico that attend their schools.

While this change could affect students, it also affects the two neighboring school districts.

Frank Chiapetti, superintendent for Gallup-McKinley County Schools, said that so far the only agreement they have with WRUSD is for students in Pigeon Springs Road, N.M. The housing in that area is divided by the Arizona and New Mexico state line, but WRUSD is allowed to get students from that area.
