WINDOW ROCK — The scheduled closure of the Cholla Power Plant in April could have major financial consequences for Navajo Nation chapters that rely on its revenue, newly elected Council Delegate Arbin Mitchell warned during the Wide Ruins Chapter’s recent planning meeting.
Mitchell informed chapter officials that the power plant, operated by Arizona Public Service in Joseph City, has been a key contributor to the Navajo Nation’s revenue. The plant’s closure means a potential loss of funding for multiple chapters, including Wide Ruins, Ganado, and others that depend on APS-generated tax revenue to support community services. The financial impact could result in budget cuts for local programs, infrastructure improvements, and essential services. Mitchell urged chapter leaders and tribal officials to proactively address the funding gap before it affects critical community operations.
