Officials: School administrator did not get ‘kicked out’ of meeting

WINDOW ROCK

Faye Blueyeyes, a school administrator for Dzilth-Na-O-Dilth Community School, did not get kicked out of a meeting between tribal and federal education officials last week, according to tribal education spokespeople.

Blueeyes claims she did, as reported in the June 4 story, “Public DODE meeting closed to the public,” that she was kicked out.

But, according to Pauline Begay, president for the Navajo Nation Board of Education, and Tommy Lewis, superintendent for the Department of Diné Education, Blueeyes’ allegations of being forcibly removed from a June 3 meeting is fabricated.

The June 3 meeting was among DODE, Navajo Nation Board of Education officials and school administrators from nine different BIE-funded contract and grant schools that were up for reauthorization.

Both Begay and Lewis wrote separate letters to the Navajo Times, calling out Blueeyes for her actions and running to the Navajo Times for press.

“She was not kicked out, nor did I chase her out,” Lewis said. “I tried to reason with Ms. Blueeyes that the Board of Education wants to meet with those schools that are up for review one at a time in the conference room.”

Lewis went on to say that all school administrators and school board members were told to wait outside the Sunrise Conference Room at the DODE Complex, and that Blueeyes’ school wasn’t even up for reauthorization.

According to Lewis, asking Blueeyes to leave in a polite manner irritated her even more. The request by Lewis to leave then lead to Blueeyes showing the newspaper advertisement of the May 28 edition of the Navajo Times that indicated public meetings on three different dates for the schools up for reauthorization, Lewis said.
