Competing against the best long distance runners from 17 states, Window Rock sophomore Chamique DuBoise proved she can compete with the best.

DuBoise, the reigning Arizona Division III 3200-meters state champion, finished ninth place in the grueling event at the 40th Annual Great Southwest Track & Field Classic in Albuquerque last weekend.

“The field of athletes and the competition was strong,” DuBoise said. “I knew what I was going up against. I focused on running the best I could. I missed earning a medal by one runner. I did a lot better than I expected.”

DuBoise completed the eight-lap race in 11:54.67, which was well off her personal best by 34 seconds.

“I ran my personal best in Phoenix,” she said. “The elevation in Phoenix is lower and my time is better there. In Albuquerque, the elevation is higher and my time is slower.”

DuBoise stayed with the lead pack through six laps. Runners in the lead pack began to pull away as DuBoise began to suffer from fatigue.

“It was a fast pace,” she said. “I learned from the race. I wanted to medal. I missed earning a medal by one place. I was satisfied with my performance.”
