Tohatchi’s Karlex Capitan (24) looks to shoot from beyond the three-point line on Saturday, June 11 at Santa Ana Star Center. The North All-Stars defeated the South, 104-82.
Karlex Capitan always wanted to be on his aunt’s level.
After being named to two New Mexico High School Coaches Association All-Star teams, he surpassed her accomplishments.
Capitan, from Tohatchi High School, was one of dozens of area athletes named to the 2016 NMHSCA All-Star teams in girls and boys basketball, football, baseball and softball, but was one of a few named to two teams – the 3A/4A North football and basketball team.
He said it was an accomplishment he longed for. His aunt, Shelby Capitan, was named to the All-Star team in 2009 and he wanted to do the same.
“My auntie was a role model back then,” he said. “I wanted to kind of be like her and try to get on her level. It means a lot, I pushed myself to do it.”
If being named to two teams wasn’t enough, Capitan got to play in both all-star games and won both with his teammates.
Over the weekend the North football team beat the South football team 13-12 and later the basketball team did the same with a 104-82 victory.
He said it was the perfect way to end his high school sports career.
“I enjoyed both, I can’t say which one was the best,” he said. “We kind of had a tough season this year but we did our best and I did my best.”
