Morning Star Leaders Youth Council (MSLYC) is in the midst of their fourth annual ACE Backpack Drive and they started it by hosting a basketball clinic with Jude Schimmel on July 3 at the YMCA in Scottsdale, Ariz.
MSLYC is a branch of the non-profit Morning Star Leaders Foundation (MSLF) and is “a community of committed youth and parents who selflessly volunteer their time and resources… for the benefit of all youth involved,” said Rob Salas, MSLF board secretary.
Salas added that MSLYC is a “blessing sent to (his) family.” They are able to embrace their inter-tribal community through “kinship, culture and traditions while still benefiting from the accessible resources a big city offers.”
According to co-founder Debbie Manuel, MSLYC formed because “it’s vital to help shape generations of leaders that would ultimately be graduating from high school in moving on into college.”
“We work as a family. Many of us understand that in a family we respect, love and care for one another,” Megan LaRose, president of MSLYC added.
