Sage Yazzie: A Rising Football Star with Deep Roots

WINDOW ROCK – Sage Yazzie, a standout wide receiver for Western Colorado University, is making an impact not only on the football field but also within his community. As he embarks on his senior year, Yazzie attributes his early life on the reservation and family heritage as reasons for his game.

Born and raised in the Chinle area, Yazzie’s journey to Western Colorado has been deeply influenced by his connection to the Navajo Nation. “I’ve spent most of my summers in Ganado and Chinle,” Yazzie shared. “That’s where my family is from, and it’s where I find my peace and train.”

Yazzie’s passion for football is rooted in family tradition. His father and uncles were all football players at Ganado High School, setting an example that Yazzie followed from a young age. “My dad was my biggest inspiration. He passed away during my senior year of high school, and his memory motivates me every day,” Yazzie said.

Currently in his fifth year at Western Colorado, Yazzie has been a key player for the team, contributing to their top 15 national rankings in the NCAA Division II. This season, he has already made a difference on the field, with notable performances in the team’s recent home opener. “We had a close game, but we came out on top, and I had a solid game with four catches for about 50 yards,” he said.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Yazzie’s cultural background plays an important role in his life and plans for the future. “Growing up on the rez, I saw both the struggles and the strength of my community. It’s made me value the opportunities I have and pushed me to make the most of them,” Yazzie explained.

His commitment to his heritage is also reflected in his plans to give back to his community. He hopes to organize youth football camps on the Navajo Nation in the future.

In addition to football and schoolwork, Yazzie runs Native Nature LLC, a photography and videography business inspired by the natural beauty and tranquility of his surroundings. “I want to showcase the beauty of nature and local businesses on the rez. It’s about giving back and showing that you can succeed no matter where you come from,” he said.

As he continues to make strides on and off the field, Sage Yazzie remains a proud representative of his Navajo heritage, driven by the legacy of his father and the support of his community.
