Page girls, Tuba City boys earn sectional titles

In a classic matchup between two of the top area female harriers, Ganado senior Daangoiina Haven and Window Rock junior Chamique DuBoise, it was Haven who claimed the Arizona Division III, Sectional cross-country championship.
Haven, who is being recruited by the University of Arizona, said she knew prior to the race that she would be challenged by DuBoise, who finished in 19:05.
“I had good workouts during the week,” she said. “…Chamique led from the start and I stayed close behind. About midway through the race, I picked it up and passed Chamique. It wasn’t until the final one-half mile that I was able to pull away.”
En route to her championship, Haven set a new course record, turning in an 18:50 and breaking the existing course record by two seconds. Former Chinle runner Rolonda Jumbo held the course record of 18:52, which she set in 2012.
Ganado settled for second place with 63 points, five points behind team champion Page (58).
Ganado sophomore Janaya McIntosh finished fifth place, touring the 5,000-meter course at Hidden Cove Golf Course in 20:04. Freshman Allayah Reid claimed 13th, negotiating the terrain in 21:09. Junior Shamiqua Nez posted a 21:15 for 17th. Junior Liolya Thompson finished 27th at 21:43.
