Shiprock, Zuni cross-country provide stout competition at district

FORT WINGATE, N.M.

Few people expected Shiprock senior Lacey Howe to win the District 1-4A girls individual title.

And not too many people expected the Zuni T-Birds to challenge Kirtland Central for the boys team title.

But on Saturday they got to witness both as Howe beat Kirtland Central freshman sensation LaKyla Yazzie for the second time in as many tries this past season. Howe outpaced Yazzie and crossed the finish line in 22:06 shattering the course record by over two minutes. Yazzie was a distant second at 22:21.

“What helped me was this week’s practice,” said Howe, who led her team to a first place finish. “Coach (Alice Kinlichee) made us run hills at practice like crazy, so I owe my win today to her because she pushed me through this.”

As for Zuni, the T-Birds packed four runners in the top seven and finished with a team score of 36 points. Kirtland Central, meanwhile, had four runners in the top 10 with freshman Kashon Harrison and Aaron Bunny going 1-2 with Harrison clocking in at 17:43.

Needless to say, the Broncos also finished with 36 points, and both teams’ sixth runner decided the team title. The Broncos got a 16th place finish from Osean Nez while Zuni had Jacy Edaakie finish 23rd.
