When it came to volleyball in the Gallup-area, the Wingate High School Lady Bears might have been the pick of the litter.

The Class 4A squad competed with nearby 5A schools Gallup High School and Miyamura High School, and often dominated. But last weekend at the New Mexico Activities Association State Volleyball Championships, they learned that wasn’t enough.

When they lost to Silver High School in the quarterfinals 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-21), they learned that they needed to dominate wherever they traveled.

“I don’t know if it’s an intimidation factor, but we don’t play teams like this,” Wingate head coach Karen Malone said. “We don’t play this (kind of) ball out there and it’s really hard to be competitive where we are, and then come here and face this. It’s such a different game and as much as I tried to prepare them for it, it’s just different.”

The hard-hitting Silver lineup left the Lady Bears stuck in their track as every hit they attempted went down for a kill.
