Page netters aim to be among conference best
KAYENTA
With a strong showing at the Kayenta Township MV Mustang Volleyball Invitational, the Page Lady Sand Devils are making a strong case to be included among the elite teams in the 3A North conference.
The Sand Devils finished with a 4-2 record in pool play action last Friday. The next day they came within two games of playing in the championship game during the 14-team tournament.
“This year is a new year for us,” Page coach Joe Kauliakamoa said. “Things are changing and we’re actually a team to be worried about right now. We love that feeling and we earned that with the girls working hard. They played club and they listen to us coaches and it shows on the court. We like the difference.”
The third-year coach said this was the first time his team played in the main draw of the tournament after playing in the silver bracket for the past two years.
“For us to be in the top bracket is a great feeling,” he said. “We love the feeling of importance. We’re kind of making a name and we want to show everybody that Page High has something to represent to other people. We are very grateful of this opportunity.”
Kauliakamoa said he was happy with the number of wins they earned during the two-day tournament.
“Our pool play was strong and I felt that our bracket play was even stronger,” he said. “It’s real rare that we ever had a chance to do better on the second day of a tournament and our team did that.”
