Senate deadline passes on Grand Staircase plan challenge
GRAND STAIRCASE-ESCALANTE, Utah
The United States Senate did not act by a June 11 deadline on a resolution challenging the 2025 Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument management plan, leaving the measure subject to 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
The deadline applied to S.J.Res.109, which seeks to use the Congressional Review Act to overturn the monument’s management plan, according to a June 12 release from the Grand Staircase-Escalante Inter-Tribal Coalition. A related measure, H.J.Res.151, could still be considered in the House of Representatives and Senate.
The Congressional Review Act allows Congress to disapprove certain federal agency actions. Under the law’s expedited process, a joint resolution can pass the Senate by a simple majority if acted on within 60 Senate session days after the action is entered into the Congressional Record.
That period ended June 11 for S.J.Res.109, according to the coalition release.
