Wilberforce University women’s volleyball coach Jasmine Coleman works with Shaundiinae Benally on her footwork during the Rising Stars Volleyball Camp on Friday morning at Navajo Preparatory School in Farmington.

The annual camp for basketball and volleyball was canceled for several years because of Covid. It made a return in 2024, but with very little interest the organizers had to pull the plug for last year’s camp.

“With everything going up pricewise, we had to go up with our overnight camp (fees) last year and so we didn’t get the numbers we wanted,” Rainy Crisp, the lead organizer for the camp, said on Friday. “The numbers weren’t great, so we didn’t have the camps last year.”

With the cost being factored in, Crisp said it led to a shift as this year’s camp was strictly a day camp with no overnight stay at the Navajo Preparatory School campus in Farmington. With that, the participants either paid $30 per day or $80 for three days.
