Colorado poet laureate Crisosto Apache awarded $50,000 fellowship

Crisosto Apache, Colorado’s poet laureate and a Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache and Diné poet, is also among the 22 poets selected for a $50,000 fellowship from the Academy of American Poets.
Apache is Áshįįhí and born for Kinyaa’áanii.
The academy selected Apache for its 2026 Poet Laureate Fellowship to support a project featuring young poets from throughout Colorado. The project will create recurring anthologies featuring writers younger than 18 from every county in the state.
The project follows a 2026 anthology featuring Colorado’s 10 previous poets laureate. According to the academy, future volumes featuring young writers are also intended to generate financial support for the state’s poet laureate program and involve communities beyond Colorado’s major population centers.
