When Kim Etsitty sails into Southeast Greenland this year, then maps the seafloor between Hawaii and Guam, her students at Navajo Pine High School will be along for the ride.
Etsitty, a Diné science teacher, has been selected for two national science education expeditions, a double honor that will let her broadcast lessons from the Arctic and the Pacific back to her classroom and across the Navajo Nation.
She was named a 2026 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow by the National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions, and a 2026 Lead Science Communication Fellow by the Ocean Exploration Trust, which operates the Exploration Vessel Nautilus.
Etsitty is Tódích’íi’nii and born for Tó’aheedlíinii. Her maternal grandfather is Kiyaa’áanii and her paternal grandfather is Naakaii Dine’é. Originally from Chinle and a graduate of Chinle High School, she has taught Diné children since 2015 and writes curriculum for Los Alamos National Laboratory.
